The County Transfer Station & Recycling Center is our centrally-located facility for collection, management, recycling and disposal of solid waste, recyclable materials, and other refuse of the residents and businesses of Madison County. At the Transfer Station, our community’s solid waste is transferred from collection vehicles into larger trucks, to be transported to a disposal or recycling destination outside the County. The Transfer Station commenced operations on June 1, 1999, following the closure of the County’s Landfill. As a result of the closure of the County’s old landfill, as well as state regulations which require maintenance of a solid waste management plan, the County is subject to a level of regulatory oversight and reporting that necessitates ongoing environmental and engineering consulting services. The County has contracted with Waste Management, Inc. for the operation of the transfer station. WM charges the County a flat rate for operation of the facility, and separate fees for trucking solid waste from Madison to Amelia County’s landfill.
